Under Starters Orders In Comer

By Jim Buggy

Erin’s Own of Castlecomer who this year celebrate their 125th anniversary are launching their most novel fundraising venture yet. The club, who have developed their facilities at Canon Kearns Park and Aras Ui Mhaollaigh over the last number of years and continue to maintain and use the Prince Grounds now require your help to develop them further. Fielding 17 teams in both Hurling and Gaelic Football, these marvellous facilities are continually used all year round.

The level of support provided by the local community thus far has been phenomenal and it has provided the club with the means to continue to serve the people of Castlecomer. Erin’s Own GAA club like all clubs these days are looking for new and inventive ways to make some money for their club. They have come up with a great idea in which you make all the decisions and you win all the money.

“FANTASY CHELTENHAM” is a novel fundraiser like no other we have been involved with in the past”, said Eamon Holland speaking on behalf of the club, “ The interest we have generated is fantastic and we have people buying tickets from us from all over just to be involved in the four days of fun and with €3,000 in cash prizes there is plenty of money to be won.

The club has made significant improvements in the facilities available to Erin’s Own GAA in Ballycomey in the last few years. We were looking for a new way to be able to generate some money for the club which we put directly into further developing our third pitch as well as many other plans we have under consideration”.

The club are planning to use the funds raised to progress to the next phase of their development which will involve the building of a covered seating area and training grounds. The details below explain the Fundraiser the club is running at the moment. It is based around the Cheltenham Races with €3000 in prize money.

All the information you need is available on the Erin’s Own website , phone 087 6990692 or e-mail  The club will have a call centre in place for the racing days to take the e-mails, text messages and phone calls. All daily winners will be contacted by the end of each day and overall winners at the end of the four days.

To submit your entries to this ingenious fundraiser is quite simple. Select 4 horses per day, one from each of the first 4 races. Selections can be made by simply picking the horses number in each race and then either texting, phoning or e-mailing your selections to the call centre on the day of the races . The club has not done anything like this before but believe that the novelty factor involved in this project will be a big attraction for all hurling and racing fans alike. Many G.A.A. followers are also fans of national hunt racing and this fundraiser event will allow followers of both sports to put their racing knowledge to the test and perhaps make a tidy sum of money for themselves.
