2010 Texaco Sportstars Bursary Awards

Erin’s Own GAA Club, Castlecomer, has been selected to receive a bursary to the value of €5,000 as part of the 2010 Texaco Sportstars Bursary Awards.

The executive committee of the club will attend a media reception tomorrow in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin, to receive this bursary.

Erin’s Own were chosen as one of 20 sports clubs in Ireland to receive a bursary of €5,000 each. The bursary will be used to develop the club facilities at Ballycomey, Castlecomer with the goal of making it the leading club grounds in Kilkenny.

Club Secretary, Stephen Dwyer entered the awards in July through submitting a detailed business plan listing a schedule of proposed works and statement of development. The entry was evaluated by an independent panel of sports experts, who based their decision on a combination of worthiness of the project and the deservedness of the club. The club was made aware of the news two weeks ago by Texaco Ireland and have since announced it to the main club committee.

Erin’s Own GAA club celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and are delighted to receive this award which will benefit members of the club, which has now exceeded 500.

125 Celebration Dance

Erin’s Own will hold a gala dinner dance in Hotel Kilkenny on Saturday November 6th. The Artane boys band will get the night underway, followed by Uisce Beatha and a disco.

This promises to be a night to remember. Tickets will be on sale from this weekend, available from any commitee member.

Senior Quarter Final

Erin’s Own advance to the semi final stage for the second successive year following an impressive win over Clara in Ballyragget on Saturday.Space was at a premimun throughout, with both defences on top and the vast majority of scores coming from frees, resulting in a dogged game, which the locals were better equipped to grind out the result. The Comer defence once again produced the goods closing down the Clara forwards, who had been most impressive against the Feninans the previous Sunday, forcing them to shoot from distance, clocking up 17 wides to our total of 8. The half back line also contributed 5 points of their sides total. the midfield pairing of Ronan Ryan and Gordon Byrne worked tirelessy and the forwards were a constant threat.All can now look forward to semi final day on October 10th.

U-11 James Stephens Tournament

Congratulations to our u-11s who won the shield final in larchfield on saturday morning. Their path to the final having started with a 2 point defeat to Graigue Ballycallan following a thrilling game that could easily have gone either way, next up was Gowran, with our boys proving too strong on the day, setting up a final against Na Fianna (Dublin). the sides were level at half time. The Comer boys opened up a 4 point lead, which the Dublin boys reduced to the mininum entering the final minutes, but the lads held firm to claim the sheild. Minor Championship Q-Final

Erin’s Own bowed out of the Minor championship on Friday in Freshford against Dicksboro. The locals battled hard throughout,with the city side having too withstand sustained pressure during the second half. This young side show great promise and displayed a great ethic. U-8 Hurling Blitz

Erin’s Own hosted an under 8 blitz in Ballycomey on Saturday morning. Our lads had a convincing win in their first match against St Martins Muckalee with 3 goals each for Liam Doyle and Lee Holden and another from a long range sideline cut by Shane Coogan. In the next match Ballycallan won a close game by 3 goals to our 2 goals and a point. The third game was against Danesfort and the lads put in their best performance of the day, with the defence holding Danesfort to one goal and running out winners by a couple of goals and lovely points from man of the match Lee Holden and Luca Downey. Erin’s Own fielded 16 players, 13 of whom will still be Under 8 in 2011 and deserve great credit for playing so well against older and stronger teams.
