2012 U16’s reach Shield Final

Congrats to our U16 team on reaching the U16 Roinn A shield final after a tight but well deserved win over Slieverue on Sunday on a scoreline of 2-9 to 2-8.

Played in good conditions it was the Slieverue boys who dominated the opening fifteen minutes scoring two good goals. The Comer boys didn’t panic and with a few positional switches the Comer boys fought their way back into the match approaching half time. Going in at the break the Comer Boys had a share of the spoils on a score line of 1-6 to Comer and 2-3 to Slieverue. The second half was nip and tuck throughout with no more than a point or two separating the teams throughout. The Comer defence stood firm against the strong running of the Slieverue forwards and limited them to only five frees in the second half. It was going to take a game changing moment to decide this match and it arrived when a long range free from the Comer half back line went the whole way to the net. Slieverue came back to get the next two scores to level the match but late into stoppage time Comer’s stand out player Conor Delaney split the posts after a well worked ball to give the Comer boys a hard earned but deserved victory on a score line of 2-9 to 2-8. All the Comer boys gave it their all with some great displays from Steven Dowd, Conor Delaney, Johnny Callinan, Sean Buggy, Niall McMahon, Shane Feehan, Rian Holden and Griffin Carroll.

Erin’s Own Under 12 Annual Gerry Holden Blitz.
Last Saturday week Erin’s Own Bord na Nog hosted the seventh annual Gerry Holden Blitz in Ballycomey. The gods were looking down on the days hurling as scarcely twelve hours earlier it looked as if the blitz would have to be called off due to the horrendous weather. However on Saturday morning six clubs provided the large attendance with great matches, plenty of individual star performances and above all enjoyment for all in the glorious sunshine.
The games were played in a great spirit with the participation of over one hundred boys on the day. The local boys entertained Dunamaggin in the first game and a few late scores saw the Comer boys across the line. In the other group Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin were proving the team to beat in all their games. Comer entertained Dicksboro in a race to see who would contest the cup playoff and it was the city boys who prevailed. Comer played O’Loughlins in the shield final and proved much too strong for their city opposition.

The final brought Dicksboro and Kilmacud Crokes together and in probably one of the best finals ever in this blitz both teams needed sudden death to separate them at the finish with the Dublin boys prevailing. All teams were then feted in the club rooms with the presentation of medals to all participants of all teams. Great hurling was played throughout the day with fantastic skill shown by players of such a young age. The Erin’s Own panel on the day was. Jamie Maher, Dan Coogan, Christopher Kruff, Jack Buggy,Declan Buggy, Cathal Holland, Conor McMahon, Kevin Holland, Conor Clarke,Lee Holden, Nicky Connolly, Liam Holland, James Buggy, David Ferris, JamesBrennan,Billy O’ Neill, Kealan Ring, Killian Hogan.

On Tuesday last the Erin’s Own Under 12 boys travelled to Thomastown to take on Thomastown in the fifth round of the Callan Under 12 Tournament. Played in difficult conditions the Comer boys went about their job with great gusto and were rewarded when Jamie Maher finished to the net. With little separating the teams throughout the half it was the Comer boys who went to the break with a slender three point lead. In the second half Comer took control and with all the boys hurling very well they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 5-6 to 1-5 to keep their 100% unbeaten run intact. Next up is the county go games this Saturday against Ballyhale Shamrocks followed by two matches in the Callan Tournament against Danesfort and Freshford. The panel against Thomastown was. Nicky Connolly, Liam Holland Dan Coogan, Christopher Kruff, Jack Buggy, Declan Buggy, Cathal Holland, Conor McMahon, Kevin Holland, Conor Clarke, Lee Holden, , James Buggy, David Ferris, James Brennan, Billy O’ Neill, Kealan Ring, Killian Hogan. Jamie Maher.

Under 14 League.
The Erin’s Own boys have had a very busy days in the last week when they played their final two games in the league. On Tuesday last they local boys made the short journey to Coon where they took on neighbours St. Martins. The Comer boys set out their stall from the start and were six points up in the first few minutes. This set the pattern for the rest of the half and the comer boys went to the break nine points up courtesy of some lovely scores from John Dowd, Sean Buggy and James Brennan. The second half continued in the same vain with Ross Connolly scoring a brace of goals and substitute Thomas Dwyer also finding the net twice. In a completely one sided game the Comer Boys ran out on a score line of 9-8 to 0-7.

On Friday evening last the Comer boys made the long trip to Mooncoin to take on the local boys in the final round of the league. With both teams unbeaten in their previous matches this game was to determine who would top the group and proceed to the league semi finals. Mooncoin took the iniative early on and were two goals up early on but once the Comer boys settled into the game they knocked over a few lovely scores themselves to get themselves back into the game. A feature of this half was the free taking of Sean Buggy who knocked over five frees including two sixty fives to keep his team in touch. A very well worked ball up the field with John Dowd playing a lovely ball to Ross Connolly who fired to the net set the Comer boys up for the second half. Scoreline at half time was Mooncoin 3-1 Erin’s own 1-5. The second half was end to end hurling with both teams giving their all. The Mooncoin boys shot over five unanswered points but the Comer boys came back at them again and were rewarded when James Brennan finished a good move to the net. Comer then hit the post through Sean Buggy and when the same played hit the crossbar shortly after that we knew it was not to be their night. The Comer boys never gave up and fought to the end against a much bigger Mooncoin team. The final score was Mooncoin 3-12, Erin’s Own 2-6. Next up for Comer is a playoff with Lisdowney this Friday and all in the club wish the boys the best of luck.

Under 16 Roinn A Shield Semi final.
On Sunday last Erin’s Own under 16s entertained Slieverue in the semi final of the Under 16 Roinn A Shield in Ballycomey. Erin’€™s Own U8 Blitz 14th July

Erin’€™s Own ran a mini blitz with Graigue/Ballycallan, Danesfort and St Lachtains on Saturday the 14th July in Castlecomer. All teams got 3 games and the standard of hurling especially the ground hurling was exceptional.
Graigue/Ballycallan were the strongest on the day with 2 wins and 1 draw. All the matches were close and a puck of a ball was all between winning and losing. For Erins Own all the boys played really well with John Kenny outstanding and well supported by Shane Holden and Michael Brennan. Joey Ryan put his body on the line at times to prevent certain scores.Ewan Connery played well in attack and was helped by David Allen, Eoin Nolan and James Coogan. The defence was led by James Kenny, Joey Rowe, Eoghan Moore and Evan Harding. Michael Rowe and Kiel Smyth worked hard to keep the ball moving through midfield. The weather on the day was great and the pitches were in superb condition. It is great to see the boys performing all the skills and with all the training and coaching that is going on at the very young ages in the club the future looks really good for the club at juvenile level. Well done to the coaches and all the players from all the clubs.

Afterwards all the players were treated to refreshments afterwards.
Many thanks to all clubs for their support and thanks to our under 14 and under 16 hurlers Conor Delaney,Niall McMahon and Sean Buggy for refereeing.

Under 12 Callan Tournament.

Erin’s Own under 12s played two rounds of the Callan Under 12 Tournament in the last week. On Tuesday last week the Comer boys travelled to John’s Park to take on the O’Loughlin boys. In a very good game the Comer boys found themselves trailing early on to a well worked O Loughlins goal. Gradually as the half went on the locals got to grips with the match and playing some direct hurling the found the net through James Brennan, Kevin Holland and Kevin Brennan. Comer piled on the pressure in the second half to run out easy winners. In their second match of the weekend they Comer boys again faced City opposition when they entertained the boys from The Village on Saturday in Ballycomey. After a great start Comer found the net a number of times to build up a good lead. With both teams playing good direct hurling it was the Comer boys who went to the break in the lead. The village boys had some chances but Comers efficiency in front of the goals was the difference between the two teams. Comer ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-4 to 1-1.

UNDER 14 LEAGUE

In the the under 14 league played last Monday evening week in Ballycomey Erin’s Own and Lisdowney served up a cracker. Played in ideal conditions the Comer boys set out their intentions from the first ten minutes when they and raced into a seven point lead with Ross Connolly getting a great goal and following it up with a second five minutes later. The comer boys never took their foot of the gas throughout the first half and were worthy leaders at the break. The second half was tit for tat in the first ten minutes with Comer keeping their lead up around the seven to ten point lead. However Lisdowney grew into the game and coming to the last few minutes they took the lead again. But the Comer lads kept to their task and Sean Buggy shot the all important equaliser to give both teams a share of the spoils.
