REPORT ON MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH.
Erins Own took on St Fiacres in the first round of the Minor Roinn A Championship on Tuesday evening last in Clara. With only two points seperating these teams in the league earlier in the season this match was a potential bananna skin for the locals. However it proved otherwise as the local boys drove into the match from the first ball and never relented all evening. With the backs settling well into the game and delivering a great supply of good ball down the field it was only a matter of time before scores would follow. Rian Holden knocked over a couple of frees early on and with the ever dangerous Daragh Brennan setting up many chances for his teammates the early goal came via some great work via Eoin Brennan to give them a a five point lead. Erin’s Own were to suffer a big blow when influencial attacker Robert Moran limped out of the game after fifteen minutes with a very bad injury. At half time Comer were six points to the good on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2 which seemed very fortuotous as St. Fiacres had some attrocious wides from play and frees. Early in the second half Comer put the game beyond their opponents reach when Eoin Brennan and Daragh Brennan raised the green flag again in quick succession along with some fine frees from Rian Holden. Johnny Callinan also chipped in with two smashing points and the industrious Martin Walsh setting up plenty of opportunities for those around him. In the end it was a great team performance with the only negative being the loss of Robert Moran to a long time injury. Finalscore, Erin’s Own 3-15 St.Fiacres 0-8.
Team. J.Buggy, N.McMahon,C.Wallace, A.Dowd, S.Rice, C.Delaney, E.Heally, S.McDermott, E.Walsh, J.Callinan 0-2 R.Moran, R.Holden (0-6 frees) D.O’Neill(0-1) E.Brennan (2-2) D.Brennan (1-3) Subs. M.Walsh (0-1) J.Brennan,
E.Holland, J.Comerford, E.Coogan

Erin’s Own U9’s hosted St Martin’s on Saturday morning in Ballycomey. Thanks to Kiel and Liam for volunteering to play a half each in goal for St Martins so everyone played the full match. In a welcome change the home team were out of the blocks quickly and were five goals to one up at half time with a 3 goals from Cathal O’Reilly and one each from Alan Smyth and Shane Coogan. All the Comer boys were playing well especially John and James Kenny who kept the ball going forward. Erin’s Own continued to attack in the second half but with Liam producing some great saves for St Martin’s we could only add two James Kenny points to our score but defended well to restrict St Martin’s to a couple of points. A 20 min game of football followed which St Martin’s won rounding off a great hour of gaelic games.
Panel: Ciaran Meagher, Adam Stone, John Kenny, Ewan Connery, Kiel Smyth, James Kenny, Liam Doyle, James Hogan, Brian Holland, Michael Rowe, David Allen, Cathal O’Reilly, Jack Brennan, Alan Smyth and Shane Coogan.

Erins Own 2-14 Tullaroan 1-8
Torrential downpours before and during this match led these two teams to play out a scrappy game of hurling, which had brief flashes of excellence despite the lashing rain and biting wind. Tullaroan were first out of the blocks but a brace of points from Ciaran McDermott and Jimmy Byrne before a couple of frees by Eddie Brennan levelled the sides before the same player bagged the first goal of the game, again good movement by the Comer forwards splitting apart the Tullaroan defence to leave the half time score 1-7 to 6 points. The second half started similar to the first, with Tullaroan starting the brighter of the two teams but it was Comer who struck first through an Eddie Brennan free. Jimmy Byrne added another a minute later before Eddie Brennan added to his already impressive tally with another point. Eoin Brennan pushed Comer further ahead with a well taken goal with a deft flicked effort. Eddie Brennan pointed another free and Tullaroan found themselves eleven points behind. Tullaroan snatched a goal back from substitute Bill Simpson after a ball across the square wasn’t dealt with by the Comer defence. Substitute Darragh Brennan capped of a good performance by Comer to leave them nine points clear at the final whistle.
Teams: Erins Own: Jim Buggy, Ciaran Wallace, Damien Mullins, Noel Callinan, Liam Wallace, Pauric Keating, Declan Dunne, Jimmy Byrne, Ciaran McDermott, Eoin Brennan, Eddie Brennan, Eoghan Meally, Ciaran Brennan, Dermot Wallace, Michael Dwyer. Subs: Sean McDermott, Anthony Kavanagh, Andrew Carron, Joe Meagher, Darragh Brennan.

In a closely contested first half the Village boys took a slender one point lead to the break leading 1-3 to 1-2. In the second half it was tit for tat early on but a few missed chances at one end and a few gifted balls to the opposition at the other end were the difference. As always the Comer boys stayed fighting till the very end but had to settle for second best on a scoreline of 3-6 to 2-3. Panel. R.Brennan, R.Connolly,C.Holland,D.Buggy,J.Dowd, A.Brennan, C.McMahon, J.Brennan, S.Coogan, O.O’Rourke.

Under 16 Roinn A Championship
On Wednesday evening last Erin’s Own under 16s took on The Rower Inistioge in the first round of the Under 16 Roinn A Championship in Larchfield. Played in good conditions it was the Comer boys who had first use of the breeze and knocked over a point courtesy of Rian Holden. However the were caught for two sucker punches of goals against the run of play and from there to the break the Rower boys dominated proceedings. The Comer boys didn’t panic and with a few positional switches the Comer boys fought their way back into the match approaching half time with Jamie Holohan knocking over a goal and a point and Steven Dowd breaking up the field at every opportunity. The same player knocked over a wonderful point from sixty yards after catching a great ball. Going in at the break the Comer Boys had An up hill challenge ahead of them as the were in arrears on a score line of 3-5 to 1-6. The second half totally belonged to the Rower boys and they raced into a big lead early in the second half. Despite the best efforts of Conor Delaney, Steven Dowd, Niall McMahon, Sean Buggy, Griffin Carroll and Rian Holden they just couldn’t hold the Rower and lost out on a score line of 3-15 to 1-8

Under 12 Callan Tournament Final
On Sunday last the Erin’s Own Under 12 boys travelled to Callan to take on Freshford in the Final of the Callan Tournament. With both teams unbeaten in all their group games this had all the ingredients of a cracker. Played in lovely conditions the Comer boys set out their stall from the start with some great hurling all over the field. Playing direct hurling the Comer boys ran into an early lead with the elusive James Brennan posting 2-2 in the first quarter. With goalie Jamie Maher handling anything that came his way this set the platform for the Comer defence to launch ball after ball down on top of the Freshford defence. Coming to the break the Comer boys led by 3-6 to 1-3. If the first half belonged to the Comer defence where the fullback line of Nicky Connolly, Declan Buggy and Under 10 player Kevin Holland who was quite brilliant it was the forwards who took the credit for the second. With Dan Coogan, Conor McMahon and Jack Buggy mopping up everything that the opposition put down on them on the half back line this was the platform for all the Comer attacks to begin. In midfield Christopher Korff and Cathal Holland bossed affairs and delivered quality ball to the forwards as well as knocking over a few points into the bargain.  Up front the work rate of David Ferris, Conor Clarke, Billy O Neill, Killian Hogan, Lee Holden, James Brennan James Buggy and Captain Kevin Brennan was to prove the
perfect backdrop for some brilliant score taking. With cousins Kevin and James linking up brilliantly the net was rattled a further six times in the second half with all the forwards contributing. The Comer boys never stopped and showed skills beyond their years. Every young player went about theirjob with great gusto and were on top from the off.

Late in the second half as the Freshford boys made a valiant effort to reverse the score line the Comer boys never panicked and continued to hurl away and were duly rewarded when they ran out comfortable winners and claimed the Title of Callan tournament Winners on a score line of 9-11 to 3-4. Regarded as one of the big days in Kilkenny Juvenile hurling the Callan tournament commenced eight weeks ago and culminated today with a celebration of hurling which started with a parade through the town. Well done to Callan on hosting a great tournament and very well done to the Comer boys on ending up Tournament final winners.
The panel for the Callan Tournament was Jamie Maher Nicky Connolly, Declan Buggy, Kevin Holland, Dan Coogan, Conor McMahon,  Jack Buggy, Cathal Holland, Christopher Ruff,  Conor Clarke, . Kevin Brennan Lee Holden, James Buggy, James Brennan, Billy O’ Neill, David Ferris, Koala Ring, Killian Hogan Liam Holland
