Bord Na Nog A.G.M.

The AGM of Erin’s Own Bord Na Nog took place on Friday last the 23rd November in the club room’s of Ballycomey. A very good attendance of parents and coaches attended this very important information evening and review of the year. The Chairman Colm Meagher in his last address before stepping down from his role after three years thanked all the coaches, parents and of course the players. He highlighted the enormous role the Bord Na Nog plays in the overall running of the club and all its activities. He thanked the various coaching/management teams involved with all the teams from under 6 up to Minor level. He had special praise for the players on all the teams and the disciplined way in which the carry themselves when representing the club. He felt this was because of the way they were brought up at home and he noted that it is over five years since any underage player had been sent off representing the club and is how it should be. He thanked Sean Smyth for his help in the grounds, the numerous catering committee groups and he spoke at how well all our tournaments were run and go game blitz’s and that we are constantly complimented by participating clubs on how we run our blitz’s. He wished the club well for the next year and asked that the same effort be applied to keep the club moving in an upward way as it had been for the last number of years. The secretary Michael Holland gave a detailed report on all the clubs activities on the field and again thanked all the coaches. There was a discussion on bringing on new coaches who would like to get involved in the coaching of the club’s juvenile players. Never has the club had so many enthusiastic volunteers willing to get involved and it is testament to the way the Bord na Nog is run in the club that there will be up to five coaches per each team for 2013. The meeting elected a new Chairman and Secretary for the coming year. John Buggy will be the new Chairman and Martina O Reilly will take on the busy roll of Secretary. The club intend to organise advanced coaching courses and introductory coaching courses for anyone who would like to get involved. Chairman of the Club Mr. Billy Moran thanked all who gave of their time to look after the juvenile members of our club and assured them that the club would always be there to support this section of the club which was playing the most vital part of the clubs progress into the future.

Club Kilkenny Flag.

On the night of the Erin’s Own Bord Na Nog AGM the club was presented with the Club Kilkenny Two Star Flag. This new initiative was launched last February by the Games Development Committee of the County Board. It involved all the clubs in the County participating in a new scheme where clubs were encouraged to run their juvenile sections of their clubs in a structured way under a number of headings and were then marked and judged on these headings. Our club attained a two star flag and were one of only eight clubs in Kilkenny to attain this achievement. This is indeed a fantastic achievement and all in the Bord Na Nog section of the club from the administration to the coaches to especially the players can be very proud of this award.

Top Oil Schools Gaelic Football Roinn B

Last wed the 21st Nov saw the Castlecomer primary schools Gaelic Football team play Mooncoin NS in the county semi final. The team having won all there group matches plus there quarter final were confident going into the match.

Kicking into a strong wind in the first half they got off to a slow start and were behind 1 .1 to a point in the first 5 minutes .These lads though found there rythym and composure and settled quickly scoring a wonderful first goal with great link play which started from deep in defence. The first half produced  a tough brand of football from both sides with it proving to be the comer boys toughest match so far. Comer slowly clawed there way back into the match with strong defence, fluent link play and great finishing to eventually take control of the match to lead by 4 points at half time.

With the job only half done and realising the wind wasn’t going to do it for them they knuckled down and produced a second half of some quality.Disciplined defence, great attacking play and commitment to each other saw comer start to win more and more possession and pile on the scores to eventually win 6-5 to 2-4 to qualify for the county final.

This will be played on Sat 1st Dec in Nowlan Park at a time to be decided. We would urge all parents, family members, friends and classmates from junior infants to sixth class in the Boys NS, Firoda and Wandesforde schools to come along and support the team on Sat the 1st Dec.

Well played and congratulations to the following panel ,

Croagh Patrick 2012

Erin’s Own Croagh Patrick Climb

The Erin’s Own GAA second annual climb of Croagh Patrick took place last weekend. Thirty Five brave souls headed off for the west of Ireland very early on Saturday morning last to climb the sacred mountain and in the process raise some money for the Castlecomer Lourdes Invalid Fund and the Club. The weather was quite good considering with a few snow showers on the top of the mountain thrown in for good measure.

This event can now be nailed into the calendar as it proves to be a great physical challenge as well as a great social event also. The real winners are of course the Charity which this year was The Castlecomer Lourdes Invalid Fund and the Club. Full credit to Michael Owens for organising the weekend and here’s looking forward to 2013. Well done to all.

Under 21 Championships
Our under 21s took on St. Lactains of Freshford on Saturday last in the quarter Final of the Northern Championship in Jenkinstown. Played in excellent conditions for the time of year it was the Freshford team who settled much quicker and appeared first to nearly every ball around the field. Freashford raced into four points lead and but for some wayward passing and wrong options they could have been a lot more ahead in the first fifteen minutes. Comer’s first score came via Andrew Carron when the Freshford corner back dropped the ball and Carron picked it up and blasted an unstoppable ball to the net. This score seemed to settle the locals down from here to the break with little or nothing between the teams at this point. However just before half time Freasford got their first goal again after some poor defending by Comer out the field. At half time Freasford held a four point lead on a shoreline of 1-5 to 1-1. Early in the second half Freshford kicked on again and opened up a six point lead and was comfortable throughout the field with their half back line in total control. A few brave substitutions by the Comer mentors brought a new energy to the Comer challenge and they were rewarded when the hard trying Eagan Mealy scored a fine point followed by a smashing goal off the ground after a long run through the Freshford defence. Freshford kept the scoreboard ticking over with some fine points from play and frees to keep the difference between the teams around the six point mark. A further Freshford goal looked to have put the game beyond any doubt with fifteen minutes played in the second half when the opened up a ten point lead but the Comer boys didn’t give up and with a couple of pointed frees from the industrious Declan Dunne and two quick goals from Shane Rice and first Daragh Brennan brought Comer right back into the match. Comer worked the ball into the Freshford goal area again and with an open goal at their mercy the Comer boys missed a chance to bring the game level entering the last few minutes. It wasn?t  to be and Freshford had the last score to run fully deserving winners on a scoreline of 2-16 to 4-6. TEAM.
