U14 Roinn A v James Stephens 15.05.14

Erin’s Own under 14s kept their unbeaten run going in the Roinn A 2014 league campaign on Thursday last when the locals entertained James Stephens in Canon Kearns Park. The Comer boys played the  same opposition in the Feile two weeks earlier and shipped a heavy defeat on that day. That wasn’t to be the case this time round and the Comer boys set about their task right from the start. After conceding an early couple of points from two frees the local boys knocked over their opening point via the stick of James Brennan. The James Spephens boys appeared to be on top in many positions on the field but the Comer boys stayed to their task and never let them too far ahead. Midway through the first half the Village were worth their lead of 6 points to two. Jack Buggy added another point from a free and James Brennan added one from play. At the break the score was 8 points to 4 in favour of James Stephens. If the first half belonged to James Stephens well The Comer boys surely owned the second half as all throughout  the field the locals got on top. Nicky Connolly in goal was never breached and dealt with anything that came his way.  The full back line of Billy O Neill, Cathal Holland and Kevin Holland were magnificent throughout and with the two boys playing in the corners only aged 12 they surely hurled way above their young age. Throughout the second half Comer clawed back their opposition point by point courtesy of two frees from Jack Buggy and another from Declan Buggy who was now causing the James Stephens full back line all sorts of trouble after moving up from centre back. Alot of this pressure was coming from the amount of quality ball coming in from midfield and the half bck line where James Brennan was now positioned alongside man of the match Conor McMahon. With less than ten minutes to go the lead was now down to two points 8 to 6 and after a great move up the field a speculative ball into the Village end the ball fell to Jack Buggy who was fouled and when the ball was landed into the square James Brennan was first to react and showing lovely skill he controlled the ball before unleashing a great shot to the top of the net to put Comer ahead for the first time. On the next play the same player won the puck out and from over sixty yards landed a great point to put two between the sides. Try as the may the Village boys could not break through the Comer defence where effort after effort was blocked back and cleared. None was more to the fore here than Liam and Cathal Holland. It is testament to the Comer defence that the opposition failed to score throughout the second half. The midfield pairing of Jack Buggy and Kevin Brennan  won alot of hard ball throughout and went about setting up attack after attack for their forwards. Up front Dan Coogan caught some great puck outs when he came out the field in the last quarter. Along with those already mentioned Conor Clarke , Killian Hogan, Jordan Fanning, James Buggy and the smallest man on the field and youngest Lee Holden won great ball and used it excellently. This was a real team effort from these young boys who were behind until the 53rd minute but never pannicked and stayed about their task throughout. Next up is another city team when the boys travel to John’s Park next Monday to take on O Loughlin Gaels. TEAM. Nicky Connolly, Billy O Neill, Cathal Holland, Kevin Holand, Liam Holland, Declan Buggy, Conor McMahon, Kevin Brennan, Jack Buggy, Kealan, James Brennan, James Buggy, Lee Holden, Killian Hogan, Dan Coogan, JordanFanning.
