U 14 Hurling League Roinn A County Final 2014

O’Loughlins; 5-12

Erin’s Own; 1-14

O’Loughlins deservedly won this final after a very entertaining match played in a well appointed Jenkinstowm Pitch. O’Loughlins got off to a whirlwind start and were 3-1 to 0-0 up after only 8 minutes following a series of unfortunate errors by a nervous Erin’s Own defense. From that point to the end, the match went back and forth and the Comer lads played excellently, only to always rue the starting few minutes. By mid second half the lead was down to 5 points with the the O’Loughlins goal under siege. Despite all the effort, our lads came up short in the end and can only be commended right across the board for their willingness to fight to the very end – a genuine virtue for anyone to have. There will be brighter days ahead for this group of players.

U14 Roinn A v James Stephens 15.05.14

Erin’s Own under 14s kept their unbeaten run going in the Roinn A 2014 league campaign on Thursday last when the locals entertained James Stephens in Canon Kearns Park. The Comer boys played the  same opposition in the Feile two weeks earlier and shipped a heavy defeat on that day. That wasn’t to be the case this time round and the Comer boys set about their task right from the start. After conceding an early couple of points from two frees the local boys knocked over their opening point via the stick of James Brennan. The James Spephens boys appeared to be on top in many positions on the field but the Comer boys stayed to their task and never let them too far ahead. Midway through the first half the Village were worth their lead of 6 points to two. Jack Buggy added another point from a free and James Brennan added one from play. At the break the score was 8 points to 4 in favour of James Stephens. If the first half belonged to James Stephens well The Comer boys surely owned the second half as all throughout  the field the locals got on top. Nicky Connolly in goal was never breached and dealt with anything that came his way.  The full back line of Billy O Neill, Cathal Holland and Kevin Holland were magnificent throughout and with the two boys playing in the corners only aged 12 they surely hurled way above their young age. Throughout the second half Comer clawed back their opposition point by point courtesy of two frees from Jack Buggy and another from Declan Buggy who was now causing the James Stephens full back line all sorts of trouble after moving up from centre back. Alot of this pressure was coming from the amount of quality ball coming in from midfield and the half bck line where James Brennan was now positioned alongside man of the match Conor McMahon. With less than ten minutes to go the lead was now down to two points 8 to 6 and after a great move up the field a speculative ball into the Village end the ball fell to Jack Buggy who was fouled and when the ball was landed into the square James Brennan was first to react and showing lovely skill he controlled the ball before unleashing a great shot to the top of the net to put Comer ahead for the first time. On the next play the same player won the puck out and from over sixty yards landed a great point to put two between the sides. Try as the may the Village boys could not break through the Comer defence where effort after effort was blocked back and cleared. None was more to the fore here than Liam and Cathal Holland. It is testament to the Comer defence that the opposition failed to score throughout the second half. The midfield pairing of Jack Buggy and Kevin Brennan  won alot of hard ball throughout and went about setting up attack after attack for their forwards. Up front Dan Coogan caught some great puck outs when he came out the field in the last quarter. Along with those already mentioned Conor Clarke , Killian Hogan, Jordan Fanning, James Buggy and the smallest man on the field and youngest Lee Holden won great ball and used it excellently. This was a real team effort from these young boys who were behind until the 53rd minute but never pannicked and stayed about their task throughout. Next up is another city team when the boys travel to John’s Park next Monday to take on O Loughlin Gaels. TEAM. Nicky Connolly, Billy O Neill, Cathal Holland, Kevin Holand, Liam Holland, Declan Buggy, Conor McMahon, Kevin Brennan, Jack Buggy, Kealan, James Brennan, James Buggy, Lee Holden, Killian Hogan, Dan Coogan, JordanFanning. U14 A League – Round 1 v Thomastown 15.04.2014

Erin’s Own under 14s got their 2014 league campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday last when the locals entertained Thomastown in Canon Kearns Park. The Comer boys played against the strong wind in the first half and set about their task right from the start. After conceding an early point the local boys knocked over two good points courtesy of Kevin Holland and James Brennan. With the Comer backs completely on top there was a plentiful supply of good ball going into the forwards and they were beginning to make it pay. After a great move up the left hand side of the field a speculative ball into the Thomastown goalmouth Kevin Holland was the quickest to react to register a major score for the locals. Sometimes a goal can be worth more than 3 points and this was one occasion where that is true. This score totally settled down the Comer boys throughout the field and they began to hurl with much more efficiency for the rest of the half. The midfield pairing of Jack Buggy and James Brennan were now winning a lot of ball and setting up attack after attack and Jack shot two smashing long range points from player as the half came to an end. Just before the half ended Kealan Ring forced home a great goal to leave the locals with a comfortable but well deserved half time lead of 2-4 to 0-2. The Comer boys started the second half well and again Kevin Holland popped up with a lovely point to extend the Comer lead to nine points. With all 6 backs well in control, the Thomastown attack were finding it extremely hard to get the scores they badly needed to get back into the game. However they did register goal from a close in free and a point from play to keep them in the match. After a number of close misses the Comer attack were beginning to hold up the ball more and when on one occasion they did retain the ball close to the Thomastown goals the ball broke out to Jack Buggy his good effort at a goal was only parried away by the Thomastown goalie and Kevin Holland was on hand to whip the ball into the net to put the game well beyond Thomastown. James Brennan added a lovely individual point and Jack Buggy pointed a free to close out the scoring on a final score of 3-8 to 1-4. This was a real team effort but special mention must go to Dan Coogan, Cathal Holland, Conor McMahon, James Brennan and young Kevin Holland who finished with 2-2. TEAM. Declan Buggy, Billy O Neill, Dan Coogan, Liam Holland, Christopher Korff, Cathal Holland, Conor McMahon, James Brennan, Jack Buggy, Kealan Ring, James Buggy, Conor Clarke, Kevin Holland, Kevin Brennan, Lee Holden. SUBS. Nicky Connolly, Killian Hogan, Jordan Fanning, Daragh O Rourke, Kevin Smyth.
